Gazdewich, John

John Gazdewich May 22, 1924 March 6, 2010 John Gazdewich passed away quietly and peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital (Saskatoon) on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the age of 85 years. He was born on May 22, 1924 at the family homestead near Norquay, SK. John attended St. Joseph's High School in Yorkton, SK and later enlisted in the military to serve overseas during 1944-45. Upon returning to Canada, John served in local government and served the community in a variety of positions. He was Secretary, Town of Ituna, 1955-1966, R.M. Administrator of Bon Accord, 1951-1967 and the Ituna School Board, 1961-1967. In Ituna, he met and married Helen (nee Pieczonka) in 1957. In 1967, John moved his family to Yorkton to become R.M. Administrator of Orkney and Wallace, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. In Yorkton, he served as Secretary of the Yorkton Watershed Authority, served on the Veterinary Service Board and served on St. Gerard's Church Parish Council. John was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. John and Helen retired to Katepwa Lake, SK in 1996 to a cottage he had a great hand in constructing into a home before moving to Saskatoon, SK in 2008. John will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 52 years; sons, John and his children, Adam and Gabrielle of Calgary, AB; Jerome (Linda) and their children, Kelly Anne and Sean of St. Lazare, PQ; daughters, Andrea (Greg) Gelleta and their children, Jeanette, John, Steven, Kevin and Evelyn of Saskatoon, SK; Marcia (Tim) Benko and children, Cale and Ashlyn of Calgary, AB; brothers, Matt (Olga) of Brantford, ON and Paul of Norquay, SK; sisters, Pauline (Paul) Hudye of Kamsack, SK and Anita Mykytuik of Saskatoon, SK; brother-in-law, Steve Rudy of Canora, SK; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. John was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Anastasia (nee Watral); brothers, Mike and Peter; sisters, Ann Bilous, Mary Rudy and Stephania Gazdewich; and granddaughter, Lindsay Benko. Vigil for John will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Lawrence Demong, OSB on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon, SK with Rite of Committal to follow at Woodlawn Catholic Cemetery in Saskatoon. The family extends appreciation to the staff of St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon Cancer Clinic and Dr. Van Zyl for their kindness and great care. Augusta Victoria Gussie Gubbe September 19, 1911 March 5, 2010 Gussie has passed away, and now is in Heaven. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Robert, and by all her siblings but one. She leaves behind her son Bob and his wife Lois; son Peter, his wife Heather and their sons John and Graham; daughter Lila Doering and her son Karl; her youngest sister, Laura Auld, and many other relatives and friends. Gussie was born in Earl Grey, Saskatchewan, the first child of eleven born to Peter and Francesca Tourney. Her father was a Lutheran minister who accepted callings from parishes in Beausejour, Manitoba and Wetaskiwin, Alberta as well as Earl Grey, and she became well acquainted with the life of the rural Prairies in the early half of the 20th century. A master teacher with moral courage and strong views about social justice, Gussie was an outspoken advocate and positive influence for others, as reflected in the many friendships she has enjoyed throughout her life. A memorial service and celebration of Gussie's life will be held at 2:00 pm, March 13, 2010 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 701 Sixth Street, New Westminster, BC, followed by a reception at the church. LAVALLEE, Alfred Kay Kaw Way Kay Washakate May 1, 1932March 7, 2010 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alfred on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the age of 77 years. He is predeceased by his parents, Gabriel and Eugenie Lavallee; brother, Winston; sister, Bea; children, Darlene, Sherry and Gabriel. Alfred will be lovingly remembered by his brothers, Walter (Lena), Ray (Tillie), Alphonse, Eddie (Elaine); children, Hazel, Robert, Leona, Allen, Mavis, William, Holly, David, Lance and Sasha; mother of his children and friend, Joan Lavallee as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; AA friends and horse racing friends. A special thank you to Heartland Livestock and staff for the many years of service and friendship. Alfred served as Chief of Piapot First Nation from 1975 -1977 and also served on the SGI Board of Directors for 10 years. He raced Thoroughbred horses for over 40 years. To sum it up, Alfred was a true horseman. Wake will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Piapot Band Hall, Piapot First Nation. Pineault, Josephine

Josephine Mary Pineault (Walwyn) October 19, 1916 March 6, 2010 Josephine Mary Pineault (Walwyn) died peacefully at home on March 6th, 2010. She was born October 19th, 1916 in Lipton, Saskatchewan. Josephine was predeceased by her parents Charles and Verona; sisters Clara, Clarice and Celia; brothers Charles and Mervyn; and nephews Terry Walwyn and John Walwyn. Josephine attended school in Lipton and was involved in Girl Guides, ice and speed skating. The family spent many happy times at the cottage at Echo Lake by Fort Qu'Appelle, with aunts and uncles and friends always dropping by. Josephine remained home after high school to care for her mother and sister Clara. She started work at Fort San in 1949. In 1954, Josephine married Remi Pineault, who also worked at the San. In 1971, they transferred to the Saskatoon San, where Josephine worked in medical records and Remi worked in the canteen and craft shop. They retired together in 1976 and were able to spend a year together before Remi passed away in 1977. She enjoyed traveling, a trip to London and many happy trips around the country in her motorhome with her sister Celia. Celia came to live with her in 1995. Although Josephine never had children of her own, her home was always open to the neighborhood children, as well as nieces and nephews who will all miss her very much. She was blessed with many special friendships through her involvement in the church community and her volunteer activities with other seniors. Josephine is survived by nieces Dianne (Dennis) Schneider and family, Joanne (George) Ross and family; nephews Allan Reiten and family and Gordon Reiten as well as other nieces, nephews and special friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 11th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church (211 Avenue O South, Saskatoon, SK) with celebrant Fr. Jon Hansen. Rite of Committal will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Sheltinga, Douglas Peacefully, in his 87th years, with his family by his side in Edmonton, Alberta died on Saturday March 6, 2010 Beloved husband of Rita (predeceased) of 51 years. Loving father of Joan (Randy) and Janis Colette Sheltinga. Grandfather of Ian and Jason Civitella. Beloved brother of Audrey (Conrad) Bechard and Cecilia (John) Lowery. Sister-in-law of Jeannette Maxted. Douglas will be remembered by his niece Simonne (Bechard) Beck (Jeff), nephews Kenneth (Joyce) Bechard and Blair (Cindy) Bechard and Mark (Cynthia) Maxted, and many friends and former patients. Douglas practised medicine in Regina at the Grey Nuns Hospital (Cancer Clinic) and in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario at the Group Health Centre and Sault area hospitals. VAUGHAN, Ernest Twink The passing of Ernest Alfred Twink Vaughan, of Loreburn, Sask., occurred on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the age of 82 years. Twink is survived by his two sons, Norm (Deanna) Vaughan of Porcupine Plain, Sask. and Miles (Vanessa) of Regina; 2 grandsons, Jamie (Kara) Vaughan and Kelly (Melanie) Vaughan; 5 great grandchildren, Rhett, Kendra, Chloe, Jordis and Parker; brother, Doug Vaughan of Loreburn; sister, Shirl (Barry) Flink of Loreburn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Vye Vaughan; his sister-in-law, Velma Vaughan; his parents, Florence & Bill Vaughan. His life endeavors consisted of completing his welding program at the Palliser Campus in Prince Albert, SK and making everyone laugh with his unique sense of humor. Scotty's good natured joking and laughter will always be remembered. The family wishes to give a special thank you to the Pasqua Emergency Response Team. A traditional wake will be held at Chief Ben Paskwa Memorial Hall this evening, Monday, March 8, 2010 at 4:00 P.M. DONAUER, GEORGE George Donauer late of Regina, SK passed away peacefully on Friday March 5, 2010 at the age of 75. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Elizabeth Donauer; brothers Alfred and Robert; sister Dorothy and daughter Denise. George is survived by his loving wife Pauline of 50 years; daughter Debbie; sons Garth (Nancy), Brian (Christie) and two grandchildren Ryan and Chelsey; nieces Diedre, Diane and nephew Paul. George received his journeyman in carpentry from Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon and went on to work in the construction industry for 50 years. George played western major fastball with Kappy Kaplan and coached minor ball and hockey for 40 years. He was also an avid outdoorsman. KYDD Margaret 1908 2010 Margaret Kydd passed away Friday, March 5, 2010 at 101 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1986; her parents George and Janet Forbes; her sisters Maisie and Minnie; two sons Barry in 1959 and David in 1983; a daughter in law Dorothy (David) in 2009. She is survived by daughters Margaret (Don) McGonigal and Marion (Jim) Coulter; sons Pat (Carol), Graeme (Gail), and Dick (Yvonne); daughter in law Marion (Gerry) Powers; 22 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild. Margaret taught school in Wolseley for 17 years, sang in the choir and worked in the library. She was an avid fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Montreal Canadiens, and was always into the sporting activities of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held in the Wolseley Cemetery, Wolseley, SK., on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jim Von Reisen officiating.
